Karl Amoussou is ready to take the belt from the “Lay and Prayer”

Karl Amoussou won the season six welterweight tournament at Bellator 72 in July and has earned a title shot against current champion Ben Askren.

Winning the Bellator tournament was the first goal for Amoussou and the next step for him is to defeat Askren, who he calls the “lay and prayer.”

“I just won the tournament and I reached the first big goal in my career,” Amoussou said. “It’s just the first step. The next step is to take it from the lay and prayer, so I am focused on the next fight.”

Askren (10-0) has a fighting style that many MMA fans do not like and Amoussou is not a fan of the style either. He knows what Askren will want to do in the fight, but he plans to knock him out and become the Bellator welterweight champion.

“He is going to try and lay and pray, but he is not going to do it, he is going to sleep.”

Askren has said that the best chance Amoussou will have against him will come in the first 90 seconds of the fight. When Amoussou was informed of Askren saying that, he is glad that he realizes that he will lost the fight in the first 90 seconds.

Amoussou is not worried about the striking aspect of Askren’s game and knows that all he can do against him is lay and pray.

“What can Askren to do me actually? He can not knock me out. There is no point where he can knock me out. He can not punch. He can not kick. He can not knock me out. He can not submit me. The only thing can maybe do is lay and pray, that’s it. Even if he manages to do it in one round, I will kick his ass in the next. There are five rounds and I will be ready for five rounds.”

Bellator has not made it official when this title fight will take place and Amoussou believes the fight will happen in the next 2-4 months. It’s likely the title fight will take place in the early part of 2013.
