With a win over Rory MacDonald, Stephen Thompson believes the UFC has to give him a title shot

A huge matchup in the UFC welterweight division will take place next Saturday in Ottawa as Rory MacDonald will return to the cage for the first time since losing to champion Robbie Lawler as he meets streaking Steven Thompson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 89.

Thompson (12-1) will enter this fight on a six fight winning streak and he is coming off a TKO victory in February against former UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks. Currently, Thompson is ranked as the number two title challenger in the UFC welterweight division and he believes with a win over MacDonald, the UFC has to give him a title shot.

“After beating the number one contender, which is Rory, they have to give it to me,” Thompson stated on the Fight Network. “I know there is a lot of things up in the air right now with the welterweight division with Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz and of course there are rumors about Georges St-Pierre coming back. So there is a lot of things up in the air but I think a good win over Rory MacDonald, they have to give me that title shot.”
