Former Bellator champions Emanuel Newton and Brandon Halsey are now free agents as both fighters were recently released by Bellator.

The release of both fighters was confirmed to The MMA Report on Wednesday evening.

Newton (26-11-1) has dropped four of his last five fights and is coming off a decision defeat in August against Evgeny Erokhin in a fight that took place outside of Bellator. Halsey (9-2) has dropped back to back fights and is coming off a submission defeat in June against John Salter at Bellator 156.

I felt Brandon Halsey needed to take a step back with the type of opponents he should be facing because it was clear that he is still a young promising prospect by MMA standards, even though he was the Bellator Middleweight Champion. Hopefully, his agent is on the phone with the WSOF management to work out a contract. Just being the former Bellator Middleweight Champion would buy him some nice credibility and would buy some nice credibility for the WSOF. I wish he and Emanuel Newton well.

I am very suprised and dissappointed by these cuts. Newton was always fun to watch, such an unorthodox style. Perhaps his salary did not justify keeping him around.
Halsey has so much upside but winning the championship so early did him no favors. I hope that we have not heard the last of either man.

I am not surprised by the Newton move since he is 1-4 in his last five fights. I am surprised by the Halsey move. With the depth issues at middleweight, not sure why Bellator would make this kind of move. If I was the WSOF, I would be attempting to sign both of these guys.
