Bellator 178 took place on Friday from the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut and was headlined by Patricio “Pitbull” Freire becoming a two-time Bellator featherweight champion as he submitted Daniel Straus in the second round with a guillotine choke.

The co-main event of the fight card also saw a victory by submission as Ilima-Lei MacFarlane remained undefeated with an armbar submission in the opening round against Jessica Middleton.

A.J. McKee pretty much showed everyone that he is for real in the Featherweight division. There are plenty of intriguing matchups for him like the James Gallagher vs Chinzo Machida winner, or Noad Lahat, or even John Teixeira. But my money would be on Bellator matching him up against Henry Corrales or Emmanuel Sanchez. Ilima MacFarlane keeps showing she is a really good grappler, submission MMA fighter. A matchup between her and Anastasia Yankova would interesting, but again it’s the Anastasia Yankova weight issue. I could see Bellator matching Ilima MacFarlane up against Veta Arteaga because I really think Bellator wants the Anastasia Yankova vs Lena Ovchynnikova matchup. Glad to see Saad Awaad get back into the win column. It would be nice to see him get on a win streak, but that is tough in his division. Patricio Pitbull Freire is just good. His matchup against Daniel Weichel is going to be a good scrap.

By the way, Jordan Young has really taken advantage of the opportunities he has gotten on the Bellator prelims. Jordan Young is definitely someone Bellator should invest in signing a multi-fight contract. Also, I know Bellator is not interested in signing him, but I think Branko Busick is a MMA to keep our eyes on. Ed Ruth and Tyrell Fortune continue to progress in their Bellator careers.
