It was recently announced that Strikeforce would be holding a fight card on September 29th and the organization has announced the fight card will be headlined by Gilbert Melendez defending the lightweight title against Pat Healy.
The fight card will come from the Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento, California and the co-main event will feature the Strikeforce World Grand Prix Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and his opponent is expected to be announced shortly.
“There’s no doubt that Gilbert Melendez is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but he’s facing a tough test when he defends the STRIKEFORCE lightweight title against Pat Healy in Sacramento,” STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said. “Pat has been around the sport a long time and has put together an impressive winning streak. This is the biggest fight of his life and he doesn’t want to waste this opportunity.”
Melendez (21-2) has won his last seven fights and has not been defeated since 2008. He is coming off his trilogy fight with Josh Thomson and he won that fight by split decision. Healy (30-15) is currently on a five fight winning streak and is coming off a win earlier this month against Mizuto Hirota. His only lost in Strikeforce came against Thomson in 2010, when he lost in the third round by submission.
The preliminary card will be televised on Showtime Extreme at 8 p.m. ET and the main card will begin at 10 p.m. ET on Showtime. The fights will be shown live on the east coast and on tape delay on the west coast.
