The main event tomorrow night is in the light heavyweight division as former champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (20-6) takes on Brandon Vera (12-5, 1NC) and the winner could receive a title shot.
UFC President Dana White said earlier this week that the fighter in the main and co-main event that has the most impressive victory will receive a title shot.
Shogun has not had a fight since his 2011 fight of the year against Dan Henderson at UFC 139, which he lost by decision. Since losing his title to Jon Jones at UFC 128, he has gone 1-1 with the win coming against Forrest Griffin at UFC 134 in Brazil.
Vera has been in the UFC since 2005 and was originally a heavyweight fighter. He dropped in weight after the UFC recommended it and has gone 1-2, 1NC in his last four fights. The two losses during this recent streak are against former champion Randy Couture and current champion Jon Jones.
Vera will look to push the action tomorrow night and force Shogun to backpedal. Vera has talked this week that his opponent likes to be the bully and he has to take that away from him. If Shogun is able to push the action, he should be able to control the action.
Shogun is a huge favorite tomorrow night, but Vera has the opportunity of a life time and has said he is going to shut up all the critics tomorrow night.
