After losing the UFC heavyweight title last year, Cain Velasquez said he would be back to get the UFC title and that is what he did on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as he dominated Junior dos Santos to regain the UFC heavyweight title.
Velasquez (11-1) won all five rounds with the scores being 50-45, 50-43, and 50-44.
The fight opened with Velasquez coming straight after his opponent and landed multiple significant strikes and looked to take the fight to the ground.
He pushed the pace, which wore down Dos Santos. He would land a right hand in the first round that rocked Dos Santos and he nearly finished the fight on the ground.
Dos Santos (15-2) would survive the ground strikes and make it out of the round. However, Velasquez went back to the work in the second round and Dos Santos did not have an answer to the pace that Velasquez was pushing. As the fight went on, Dos Santos appeared worn out and could not mount an offensive attack that could end the fight.
The lost by Dos Santos snaps a ten fight losing streak and this is his first lost 2007, which was a submission lost in Brazil. After the fight, the former champion vowed to be back and get the UFC title back around his waist.
In the co-main event of the fight card, Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon put on a show as Miller scored a decision victory. Miller was able to rock Lauzon in the first round and it appeared it was on his way to a stoppage victory. Lauzon was able to survive the round and a massive cut on his forehead.
Lauzon would come back to win the second round and nearly scored a submission finish at the end of the third round. He went for a leg lock in the final 15 seconds of the fight and transition to a guillotine choke. If he would have had another 10 seconds or so, Lauzon may have pulled off the submission victory.
Miller (22-4) scored his 11th victory in the UFC and has now won two of his last three fights after being defeated by Benson Henderson last year. On the other hand, Lauzon (22-8) has now dropped two of his last three but once again showed he doesn’t know how to have a boring fight.
