Earlier this week, Alistair Overeem pulled out of his UFC 160 co-main event bout against Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt will step in to face the former UFC heavyweight champion.
The fight was originally reported by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting and the UFC has now made the fight official.
UFC 160 takes place on May 25th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena and will be headlined by Cain Velasquez defending the UFC heavyweight title against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
Hunt (9-7) has the longest current winning streak in the UFC heavyweight division with four straight wins and defeated Stefan Struve by knockout last weekend at UFC on FUEL TV 8. During his winning streak, three of his four wins are by knockout and he has won the knockout of the night bonus in two of those wins.
After the news of Overeem being out of UFC 160 was public, Hunt stated on Twitter that he was interested in the fight and asked his fans to let UFC President Dana White know that he wanted the fight.
However, White wrote on Twitter earlier this week that Hunt had turned down the fight against Dos Santos and the bout between Dos Santos and Overeem would take place later this summer. White then tweeted yesterday that he had a great conversation with Hunt.
