Cain Velasquez retained the UFC heavyweight title on Saturday night at UFC 160 and former champion Junior dos Santos won in the co-main event.
During the UFC 160 Post Fight Press Conference, UFC President Dana White was asked if the trilogy fight would be next for the two heavyweight and he said it was a “no brainer.”
He went on to say he believes the fight will take place later this year and it would happen before December.
Velasquez (12-1) defeated Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the main event of UFC 160 and only needed 81 seconds to get the stoppage victory. It was his first successful title defense and the second time that he has defeated Silva.
Dos Santos (16-2) needed nearly 15 minutes to get a victory over Mark Hunt in the co-main event of UFC 160 as he finished the fight in the final minutes with a spinning heel kick knockout. It was his third straight victory by TKO/KO and he won the fight of the night bonus.
The two heavyweights originally met at UFC on FOX 1 at the end of 2011 and Dos Santos won in the first round by knockout. In the rematch at UFC 155, Velasquez won by unanimous decision in dominating form.
White mentioned earlier this week that Velasquez’s next fight could take place in Houston and this could be a potential venue for the trilogy fight.
