Velasquez opened the fight by immediately looking for a takedown which was unsuccessful. He would look to take the fight to the ground once again and Silva stopped the attempt.

He then landed right hand that dropped Silva and finished the fight with strikes on the ground. The official end of the fight came at the 1:21 mark of the first round and the win likely sets up the trilogy fight with Junior dos Santos.
