James Krause made his UFC debut on Saturday night at UFC 161 and scored a late third round guillotine choke submission victory over UFC veteran Sam Stout.
The bout opened with Stout throwing leg kicks an the fighters clinched up against the fence. Stout was able to put Krause against the cage but backed away after being unable to mount much offense.
Krause landed a front kick to the face of Stout that backed him up. He followed up the front kick with another kick but Stout was able to escape before Krause was able to land anymore significant strikes.
Krause was able to take the fight to the ground and a cut over the right eye opened up on Stout. Krause worked his ground strikes from top position but Stout was able to get back to his feet. As the fighters were standing, Krause attempted a cartwheel kick but the attempt was unsuccessful and the fight moved into the second round.
In the first minute of the second round, Stout was able to land a two punch combination that hurt Krause and one of the punches was to the body. After a period of strikes being thrown while standing, Krause was able to take the fight to the ground. After Krause missed a ground strike, Stout was able to get back to his feet and get in his boxing stance. Stout was able to take the fight to the ground with 25 seconds left in the round but was unable to take advantage of the takedown before the round came to an end.
A majority of the final round was on the feet with Stout struggling to land strikes due to the reach advantage that Krause had. With 35 second left in the fight, Stout went for a takedown but Krause was able to lock his hands around his neck. Stout attempted to roll out of the submission but Krause secured a guillotine choke and Stout tapped out.
Krause (20-4) has now won eight fights in a row and two of his last three wins have come by guillotine choke submission in the third round.
