Bellator 99 features M’Pumbu vs. Matyushenko and opening round of featherweight tournament

Bellator 99 will be the second fight card of the upcoming ninth season and the promotion has announced five of the fights that will take place on the card. Bellator 99

The card will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout as former Bellator champion Christian M’Pumbu will meet Vladimir Matyushenko.

Bellator MMA Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced the matchups on Thursday and the card will come from the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California on September 13th.

Tickets for Bellator 99 start at just $50, and can be purchased by visiting Pechanga.com, Bellator.com, or by calling the Pechanga Box Office at 877-711-2946 or visiting between noon and 8 p.m. daily.

M’Pumbu (18-5-1) was the inaugural Bellator light heavyweight champion and lost the title earlier this year when he was defeated by Attila Vegh by decision at Bellator 91. This will be his first fight since losing the title and he has lost his last two fights after being on a three fight winning streak.

Matyushenko (26-7) will be making his Bellator debut and will look to snap a two fight losing streak against M’Pumbu. In his last five fights, he is 2-3 with all of the fights ending in the first round and both of his wins were by TKO/KO.

“This is exactly what I wanted entering Bellator, a tough test right from the start,” Matyushenko said. “I still have a lot of fights left in my tank, and this is the start of a new chapter in my career.”

The season nine featherweight tournament opening round bouts will also take place on this card with the bouts being Joe Taimanglo (18-4) vs. Andrew Fisher (12-4), Patricio Pitbull (17-2) vs. Diego Nunes (18-4), Shahbulat Shamhalaev (12-2) vs. Atop Stepanyan (13-5) and Fabricio Guerreiro (17-2) vs. Des Green (8-1).

“We had an absolutely packed house in March when we brought Bellator MMA live on Spike to Pechanga, and with this card I expect nothing but fireworks,” Rebney stated. “Matyushenko vs. M’Pumbu should be a wickedly exciting main event and will be a great compliment to the explosive start to our $100,000 Featherweight tournament. With names like Pitbull, Shamhalaev, Nunes and Guerreiro, this field is stacked.”
