Jon “War Machine” Koppenhaver used his ground game to defeat Vaughn Anderson by rear-naked choke submission in the second round and advanced to the semifinal of the season nine welterweight tournament.
As the fight opened, War Machine would take the fight to the ground and passed to the half guard position. He would work his ground strikes and would end up getting the full mount position. However, Anderson would sweep out of position and maintain top position.
While on his back, War Machine attempted a triangle submission but Anderson was able to get out of the submission. War Machine would get back to his feet in the final 30 seconds of the round. After Anderson attempted a takedown that was unsuccessful, War Machine landed several strikes before the end of the round.
War Machine would waste little time getting the fight to the ground in the second round and he landed a right hand that allowed him to pass to the crucifix position. Anderson would give up his back and he began to work for a rear-naked choke. After locking his two hands together, Anderson would pass out and referee Jason Herzog came in to stop the fight by technical submission.
War Machine will now meet Ron Keslar in the semifinals of the welterweight tournament next month.
