Former UFC welterweight title challenger Jon Fitch snapped a two fight losing streak on Saturday night at World Series of Fighting 6 with a split decision victory over Marcelo Alfaya.
In the opening minute of the fight, Alfaya was able to stop a takedown attempt of Fitch and he took the fight to the ground against the cage. Fitch would give up his back and Alfaya locked in a body triangle as he looked for a rear-naked choke. Fitch would defend the submission attempt and get back to his feet with ten seconds left in the round.
Fitch opened up the second round by pushing forward and took the fight to the ground. He rained down punches before Alfaya was able to get back to his feet. Alfaya would score another takedown and briefly had the back of Fitch. However, Fitch got back to his feet, and they clinched against the fence.
Once again, Alfaya took the fight to the ground and got the back of Fitch. He would not be able to maintain the position as Fitch got back to his feet. Alfaya appeared to be slowing down and Fitch landed an uppercut. They would strike with each other until the end of the round and the fight moved into the final round.
Before the third round started, Fitch’s corner told him to keep the fight on the feet and let his hands go. He would do that at the start of the round before Alfaya went for a takedown. The attempt would be unsuccessful and Fitch would move the fight back to the center of the cage.
Alfaya attempted another takedown, but Fitch would stop the attempt. After separting from each other, Fitch landed a right hand as Alfaya was coming forward. He would land multiple strikes on the ground but Alfaya would survive. They would battle until the final bell sounded and the scorecards would decide the winner.
Two of the three judges would have the fight for Fitch (25-6-1, 1NC) and the victory snaps a two fight losing streak for the former UFC title contender. This is his first win in over a year and he is 2-3-1 in his last six fights.
