The main event of WSOF 6 was for the inaugural welterweight title as Steve Carl submitted Josh Burkman in the fourth round with a triangle choke.
The bout opened with Burkman throwing leg kicks and he would get the fight to the ground after he slammed Carl. He would be unable to keep the fight on the ground as Carl broke away. After a brief striking exchange, Carl attempted to get the fight to the ground, but it was Burkman who took the fight to the ground.
Burkman would have top position on the ground and Carl went for a submission from his back. The attempt would be unsuccessful and Burkman ended the first round in side control.
Carl opened up the second round as the aggressor and Burkman landed a counter strike, and then went for a guillotine choke. Carl would easily escape and the fight briefly went to the mat. Burkman would have Carl stand up and they had a striking exchange with Burkman landing counter strikes.
The fight would go to the ground with two minutes left in the round with Carl in the dominant position. Carl rained down short strikes and began to look for a d’arce choke. Burkman defended the submission and the fight moved into the third round.
Carl got the fight back to the ground in the opening minute of the third round and got the back of Burkman. He locked in a rear-naked choke and it appeared that the fight was about to end. However, Burkman survived the submission and reverse the position. He went for his own choke attempt as he locked in a guillotine choke.
The submission attempt was unsuccessful but Burkman had the mount position. Carl would sweep out of the position but once again, Burkman had control of the fight on the ground. He began to work for an arm triangle choke, but he ran out of time as the fight moved into the championship rounds.
As the fourth round started, Carl took the fight to the ground and pulled guard looking for a submission. His first submission attempt would not be successful but he would switch to a triangle choke and Burkman would tap out. Carl (21-3) wins the inaugural WSOF welterweight title and he has won seven straight fights, with all of those wins coming by submission.
