The main event of UFC Fight Night 32 at the Goiania Arena in Goiania, Goias, Brazil on Saturday night was a light heavyweight bout as Vitor Belfort won his third straight fight by knockout as he defeated Dan Henderson.
The fight opened with a feeling out process for a minute before Henderson threw the first strike. In an exchange of strikes, Belfort would drop Henderson.
As Henderson got back to his feet, Belfort landed a head kick that dropped Henderson again. Belfort would throw a strike on the ground and referee Dan Miragliotta came in to stop the fight.
Since losing to Jon Jones last year, Belfort (24-10) has won three straight fight and all of the victories have come by knockout. Overall, its his 17th career win by knockout and he becomes the first fighter to finish Henderson by knockout.
Ferreira defeats Sarafian by split decision
The co-main event of the fight card was a battle of Ultimate Fighter Brazil 1 as Cezar Ferreira defeated Daniel Sarafian by split decision.
Sarafian took control of the fight early by cutting off the cage and they clinched against the fence. After being separated by referee Mario Yamasaki, Ferreira took the fight to the ground with a takedown. Sarafian would work his way back to his feet and they exchanged strikes until the end of the round.
In the second round, Ferreira wasted little time in taking the fight to the ground. Sarafian got back to his feet and landed a right hand that stunned Ferreira. After recovering from the punch, Ferreira took the fight to the ground and began to work for an arm triangle choke. For whatever reason, Yamasaki separated the fighters, even though Ferreira was working for a submission.
Ferreira opened up the final round by throwing a spinning strike, but Sarafian saw it coming and got his back. Ferreira reverse the position and took the fight to the ground. He worked his ground strikes and once again, Yamasaki stood them up. After the stand up, Ferreira took the fight back to the ground. He would get the back and went for a submission. He would be unable to get a submission before the final bell sounded.
Cavalcante knees his way to a first round victory
Former Strikeforce champion Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante earned his first win in the UFC with a submission victory in the first round via punches against Igor Pokrajac.
The fight opened with a high pace with the fighters swinging away. Cavalcante was able to close the distance and they clinched against the fence. Cavalcante set up his knees in the position and dropped Pokrajac. He would land several more strikes on the ground before Pokrac tapped out.
Cavalcante (12-4, 1NC) gets his first official win since 2011 and it’s only the second time that he has won a fight by submission.
Thatch wins once again by first round stoppage
Brandon Thatch improved to 2-0 in the UFC as he defeated UFC veteran Paulo Thiago by submission in the first round.
After the fighters clinched against the fence, Thatch was able to break away and began to land his strikes. He would throw a knee to the body of Thiago, and he immediately feel to the ground. Thatch went for the finish on the ground and Thiago tapped out on the ground.
Thatch (11-1) has won ten in a row and all of his wins have come by stoppage in the first round. This is his fourth win by submission and his last and his last eight fights have ended in less than two and a half minutes.
LaFlare dominated Ponzinibbio in decision victory
Ryan LaFlare remained undefeated in his MMA career on Saturday night as he defeated Santiago Ponzinibbio by unanimous decision.
LaFlare was able to take the fight to the ground early after catching a leg kick of Ponzinibbio. Once on the ground, he got into the mount position but Ponzinibbio was able to get him out of the position. LaFlare kept the fight on the ground and looked for a submission. His attempts would be unsuccessful and after a brief striking exchange on the feet, LaFlare took the fight back to the ground and they ended in this position.
As the second round started, LaFlare didn’t waste anytime in getting the fight to the ground. However, Ponzinibbio got back to his feet but ate a strike as he got up. Ponzinibbio would be able to keep the fight on the feet and began to land his kicks. Along with landing kicks, he landed a flurry of punches that had LaFlare on his heels. LaFlare would be able to recover and took the fight to the mat as the round came to a conclusion.
LaFlare nearly came up with a finish in the third round as he landed a knee that dropped Ponzinibbio. He attempted to finish the fight with strikes on the ground, but Ponzinibbio was able to survive and get back to his feet. It was obbvious that Ponzinibbio did not have much left in the gas tank. However, he landed a punch that dropped LaFlare but could not capitalize on the strike.
The fight went to the scorecards and all three judges scored the fight 30-27 for LaFlare (9-0). He has won back to back fights in the UFC, and both of those wins have come by unanimous decision.
Stephens stops Jason in 40 seconds
In the opening bout of the main card, UFC veteran Jeremy Stephens only needed 40 second to defeat TUF Brazil winner Rony Jason by knockout.
As Jason was throwing a right hand, Stephens countered with a kick that dropped Jason to the mat. Stephens would land another punch, but Jason was already out and referee Kevin MacDonald came in to call the fight.
Stephens (22-9) has won back to back fights since dropping down to the featherweight division and he is in line for his fourth knockout of the night bonus in the UFC.
