The light heavyweight bout between Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3 coaches Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva was scheduled to take place on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas, but the fight has been moved back to a fight card in Brazil on May 31st.
UFC President Dana White made the announcement on UFC.com on Thursday morning.
The UFC light heavyweights were initially booked to meet each other in the co-main event of UFC 173 on May 24th in Las Vegas, which is a card that will be headlined by Chris Weidman defending the UFC middleweight title against Vitor Belfort.
Sonnen (28-14-1) is coming off a TKO defeat to former UFC champion Rashad Evans at UFC 167. Prior to losing to Evans, he submitted former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 and he won the submission of the night bonus for the first time in his UFC career.
Silva (35-12-1, 1NC) only competed once last year as he defeated Brian Stann in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV 8. It was his first victory since he defeated Cung Le in 2011 at UFC 139 and he won the fight on the night and knockout of the night bonus in his victory against Stann.
The UFC had not previously announced the May 31st card in Brazil, and this will likely serve at the Ultimate Fighter Brazil Finale. A venue and city for this fight card will be announced soon by the UFC and broadcast plans for the card in the United States.
