Will Martinez was defeated by Desmond Green in the semifinals of the Bellator featherweight tournament on Friday night and after the fight was over, Martinez announced his retirement from mixed martial arts competitions.
Martinez (9-3-1) announced his decision at the Bellator 114 Post Fight Press Conference.
He entered his fight at Bellator 114 on Friday night with an eight fight winning streak and seven of those victories had come in the first round. His fight against Green marked only his third fight to make it to the third round and it was his first career defeat to come by decision.
Martinez will leave the competition side of the sport but will remain on the training side as he has a jiu-jitsu gym in Philadelphia. He will leave with eight of his victories coming by stoppage and five of those wins were by submission. Out of his five submission wins, four of them were by rear-naked choke and three of his five wins inside the Bellator cage came by rear-naked choke submission.
