The semifinals of the season ten featherweight tournament took place this past Friday night at Bellator 114 and Desmond Green and Daniel Weichel both scored unanimous decision victories to advance to the tournament final.
It was the third straight win for Green after dropping his Bellator debut last year to Fabricio Guerreiro in the season eight featherweight tournament opening round.
Both of his wins in this tournament have come by unanimous decision, but he has been unable to use one of his best weapons due to the rules for opening round and semifinal tournament bouts in Bellator.
Bellator rules call for there to be no elbows in the opening round and semifinal tournament fights. However, elbows are allowed in tournament finals and Green told TheMMAReport.com that he is looking forward to being able to throw the strike.
“It hasn’t hurt me too much but it would have helped me a lot more, especially if you would have looked at both of my fights,” Green said. “I am really good on my feet and I get guys down to the ground. When I get on top of them, any fighter will tell you it’s so easy to land elbows on top.”
“In that first fight with Mike Richman in the second period, I had side mount for all of the second period. It’s so easy to throw little shots of elbows from side mount. Much easier than to throw a punch or a strike but I couldn’t. I feel like if I could have elbowed in the Richman fight, I already had him opened up in the first, so I felt I could have easily in the second with the side mount.”
“If you look at this fight I just had with [Will] Martinez, I was on top of him for the majority of the fight again and one good elbow can change the whole dynamic of a fight. It’s like a haymaker, you land one sharp elbow and open someone up, the whole fight changes.”
At this time, Bellator has not officially announced when Green will face Weichel in the tournament final but it has been targeted to take place at Bellator 118 on May 2nd in Atlantic City. With Green being from New York, he is hoping the fight does take place on the May 2nd card so his fans on the east coast can come to his fight.
“I am pushing for it,” he said. “I was kinda getting in Bjorn’s [Rebney] ear after the fight. I was like ’is the fight going to be in Atlantic City’? He was like ‘I don’t know yet.’ I was like you should make it there and I could help out with the ticket sales. I could get a lot of sales and bring it back to the east coast. He said from the talk we had I think it’s going to be there unless something major happens. I am hoping it’s going to be there.”
