The 2014 Summer Series light heavyweight tournament actually began last night during Bellator 118 and the complete tournament field was announced during the main card broadcast on Spike TV.
Liam McGeary punched him way into the semifinals last night as he defeated Mike Mucitelli in 22 seconds and recorded the third fastest victory in Bellator light heavyweight division history.
The other three opening round bouts will take place at Bellator 121 on June 6th with the matchups being Joey Beltran vs. Philipe Lins, Edigijus Valavicius vs. Mikhail Zayats, and Carlos Eduardo vs. Kelly Anundson. McGeary will face the winner of the Beltran/Lins matchup and the semifinals are targeted to take place on the July Summer Series show.
After the complete bracket was announced by Bellator, people wondered why former champion Attila Vegh is not in this tournament and why Eduardo was placed into the field after losing to Rodney Wallace on a preliminary bout a couple of weeks ago.
Bellator MMA Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney confirmed to TheMMAReport.com that Vegh has an injury and he will be having surgery. On Eduardo, Rebney stated that they have high hopes for Eduardo and made a judgement call in putting him into this tournament.
“We had great hope for the guy, think he can be a star, and think he had an off night,” Rebney said. “I think he was in a very close fight that a lot of people think he won and just made a judgement call. He is a talented kid. We will see how talented he is.”
With the Summer Series expected to be two shows, the final of this tournament will take place during the fall season and the winner will likely get their title shot in the beginning of 2015.
