Tachi Palace Fighting 19 took place on Thursday night in Lemoore, California, and Eddie Yagin was unsuccessful in his first outing since his 2012 UFC victory over Mark Hominick.
Following a strong start, Yagin slowed down and Diego Saraiva took control of the latter two periods thanks to a stellar jab and active striking game.
Saraiva would go on to win a unanimous decision, beating Yagin for the second time (the two originally fought at TPF 2 in 2009). Saraiva (22-16-1) snapped a spell that saw him lose three of his previous bouts.
Giagos wins title on short notice
Coming into the night’s main event on short notice, Christos Giagos made the most of his opportunity by submitting TUF 12 alum Sevak Magakian late in the first round and winning the Tachi Palace Lightweight Championship.
After the a back-and-forth start to the contest, Giagos began to implement ground and pound to punish Magakian for attempting leg locks. Giagos then looked to end the fight with a rear-naked choke, but Magakian escaped only to slip into the bout-concluding triangle choke and the fight would come to an end with 15 seconds left in the round.
Giagos (9-2) has now won five of his last six fights.
Griffin impresses with submission victory
In a battle of welterweight prospects, Max Griffin looked fantastic, submitting Buddy Wallace in the second period with a rear-naked choke.
From the start of the fight, Griffin looked like the more composed fighter in every aspect of the game. Although Wallace was able to piece together some power exchanges, it was Griffin who was predominately in control throughout the bout.
In the second round, Griffin knocked Wallace’s mouthpiece out and knocked him groggy. Instead of electing for a finish on the feet, Wallace scored a takedown and locked on a rear-naked choke that elicited a tap form Wallace.
Griffin (9-1) extended his winning streak to five.
