The eleventh season of Bellator will begin in September and two of the tournaments that will take place during this upcoming season will be in the bantamweight and middleweight divisions.
Both of these divisions have recently held four-man tournaments, but the tournaments in season eleven will be eight-man fields according to Bellator MMA Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.
Rebney informed TheMMAReport.com on the size of the tournaments and the fields for both tournaments will be announced in the coming weeks.
The middleweight tournament will begin on September 5th at Bellator 123, which will be the season eleven debut. A potential candidate to be in the tournament may be season eight tournament winner Doug Marshall. He is currently under suspension with the Nevada State Athletic Commission and will be able to re-apply for a license in August. According to Rebney, Marshall is not part of the pool of fighters to be placed into this tournament since he is currently under suspension.
“I don’t know what exactly is going to happen with Doug in terms of getting off suspension and getting everything everything cleared,” Rebney said. “Obviously, the Nevada commission is one of the top commissions in the country. We are going to abide by whatever mandate they put down. At this point, he is still under suspension so at this point, he is not apart of that pool. We will see what happens with him in terms of what kind of progress he makes with the commission and what they decide to do.”
When it comes to the bantamweight tournament, Rebney previously stated that Rafael Silva and Marcos Galvao would be in this tournament. While the six other participants have not been announced, Rebney proclaimed that this bantamweight tournament is going to be the most stacked bantamweight tournament that the sport has seen.
“That bantamweight tournament is going to be unbelievable,” he said. “This is going to be the most stacked 135 pound tournament that MMA has ever seen. Obviously, [Rafael] Silva plays a role in it. There are some spectacular talented fighters that are going to be apart of that. Marcos Galvao is going to be in it and there is going to be six other monsters in that tournament.”
“As I am looking through the people that are going to be in that 35 tournament, you literally could just pick any name out of a hat and any one of the guys that is going to be in it, could win it. It as stacked of a 35 tournament that I have ever seen. I am excited about it. Really exciting fighters, finishers, and just rock solid. We are going to be announcing all of the names in short order.”
