Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner called it a career following his submission defeat to Drew Dober on the UFC on FOX 13 preliminary card on Fox Sports 1.
After the official decision was read, Varner announced his retirement to UFC commentator Joe Rogan and stated he made this decision before the fight.
Varner (21-11-1, 2NC) started competing professional in 2003 and became the WEC lightweight champion in 2008 when he defeated Rob McCullough by TKO at WEC 32.
He successfully defended the title on two occasions before being defeated by Benson Henderson. He came back to the UFC in 2012 and scored an upset against Edson Barboza at UFC 146, but he only scored one more victory after that. He will finish his career with 18 wins by stoppage and 11 of those wins came by submission.
