For the first time in his career, Michael Johnson has won four fights in a row as he defeated Edson Barboza by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 61 on Sunday night in Brazil.
During his post fight interview with Jon Anik in the octagon, he was asked who he wanted next and his response was former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson.
Following the event, Johnson explained why he called out the former champion.
“He is the only one opened,” Johnson said. “Everybody at the top of the division has fights coming up. I want the best of the division. I think I am one of the best in the division. I am ready to make a run for this title by the end of the year. We need some new faces up there. I think I am the fastest guy in the division and I am willing to test that against anybody. Once I step into the cage, I do not think anyone can test my skills. I am willing to test that against anybody in the world.”
Johnson (16-8) entered UFC Fight Night 61 as the #13 ranked lightweight in the UFC rankings and Barboza was #6. This victory should placed him in the top ten when the new rankings come out tomorrow and if Henderson is going to stay at 155 pounds, the fight between Johnson and Henderson makes sense at this time.
