Brandon Thatch vs. John Howard added to UFC 189

A welterweight bout has been added to UFC 189 on July 11 in Las Vegas as Brandon Thatch will meet John Howard.UFC 189

The fight booking was announced on Wednesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1.

UFC 189 will come from the MGM Grand Garden Arena and will be headlined by a title fight as Jose Aldo defends the featherweight title against Conor McGregor.

Thatch (11-2) will enter this fight following a defeat as he was submitted by Benson Henderson in the main event of UFC Fight Night 60 in February. Prior to the defeat, he started 2-0 in the UFC and both wins came by stoppage in the first round. Howard (22-11) came back to the UFC in 2013 and scored wins over Uriah Hall and Siyar Bahadurzada. Since those wins, he has dropped three in a row and his most recent defeat came in January against Lorenz Larkin.

  1. Do you think Tyson Fury is using Bellator as leverage to get the UFC to sign him? I think it’s a bad idea that they made it public bc UFC will prolly try to keep him away from them/ Spike TV like they did with Cro Cop.

    1. If you are Tyson Fury, the goal is to have more that 1 promotion bidding for your services. Bellator wants to bring in fighters that can bring new viewers to the promotion and I think Fury has the potential to do that. I do not think the UFC will bring him in, but I could see the WSOF attempting to sign him.

        1. That is your perception. If WSOF wants to sign him, they can get him. You may not agree with that, but that is what I believe.

        2. So you think he isn’t doing it for a pay day and only to prove a point that boxers are way better than MMA fighters?

        3. Its both, wants a pay day and attempt to prove a boxer can defeat a MMA fighter.

        4. Ray Mercer KO’d Sylvia and Couture TKO’d Toney in MMA fights. There was another boxer who had a couple of MMA fights lost 3 fights. It was Ricardo Mayorga. Idk if there are more boxers than those three that had MMA fights.

    1. Fighter pay is all speculation. Disclosed salaries only tell a portion of the story. The only people that know what the fighters actually make is the promoter. Promotions are private companies and they are not going to come out and say the exact figure a fighter made for a certain fight.

  3. If Tyson does sign with Bellator who do you think will be his first fight? Also do you think his deal will be a triple threat boxing/ kickboxing/ MMA? I think he’ll prolly fight Kongo/ Sosnovskiy/ Butler or Ayala in his first fight. And I also think he’ll prolly end up facing all 4 guys I mentioned if he does sign with them.

    1. Here is why it would not be all three, Viacom only owns Bellator. My guess, it will be a one and done for Fury. In terms of opponents, I could see it being Kimbo.

      1. I doubt it will be Kimbo bc they want someone that will beat Fury, not get killed by him. Tyson Fury would murder Kimbo in like 10 secs.
