WSOF women’s strawweight champion Jessica Aguilar is now a free agent as she has been released from her contract with the WSOF.
Aguilar announced that she is currently a free agent on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on MMA Fighting.
“I am excited to be here as a free agent today,” Aguilar stated on the weekly program. “I am looking forward to challenging myself against the best. Proving why I am the best fighter in the world in my weight class. My next step is to be the UFC champion. I have decided to be the next UFC champion and that is part of consolidating my number one ranking. The UFC was not allowed to talk to me while I was under contract with WSOF so I solve that issue for them. I am a free agent.”
Following Aguilar’s announcement that she was a free agent, WSOF President Ray Sefo released a statement on letting Aguilar out of her contract.
“We wish Jessica all the best, and hope that she will achieve everything she wants to in her career that is blossoming,” Sefo said. “We sat down with Jessica and her manager and we all agreed that she needs to move on to a place where she can compete against the best 115 pound women in the world. We have an incredible and fast-growing roster of world-class athletes at WSOF, but we do not have the best fighters in this particular women’s weight class, so it was time to shake hands and amicably part ways.”
Aguilar (19-4) is currently ranked as the number two strawweight in the MMA Rising rankings as current UFC champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk is ranked at number one.
