Bellator lightweight champion Will Brooks is coming off a successful title defense against Dave Jansen and if you follow the American Top Team product on Twitter, you know he wants a fight.
Prior to Bellator President Scott Coker holding a video chat with the fans on Friday, Brooks submitted his own question. He asked if the promotion was planning to hold an event in Chicago and would the fight card feature “The Franchise.”
“If you are watching Will, it’s pretty cold in the winter time,” Coker said on a Periscope chat. “I saw your fur coat when you sent it to me with the dirty look, but that is all love. We have massive love for you here. We are going to be talking to [Brooks manager] Monte Cox. You will be fighting here in the next four to five months. Right before the end of the year. Tell Monte we are going to be calling looking for the franchise real soon.”
Since Brooks defeated Jansen by decision at Bellator 136 to retain the lightweight title, it has been expected that his next title defense will come against season ten tournament winner Marcin Held. On the same night Brooks retained the title, Held defeated Alexander “Tiger” Saranvskiy by submission to win his sixth straight fight.
While it’s unknown if Held will be the next fight for Brooks, one fighter has stepped up on social media and is ready to take on Brooks for the title. That fighter is season ten lightweight tournament finalist Patricky Pitbull. The longtime Bellator fighter started off by asking if anyone wanted to set up to face him and mentioned Saad Awad and Melvin Guillard. Following a tweet from his brother, Patricio Pitbull, Patricky turned his attention to Brooks. The fighters went back and fourth on Twitter and it ended with Patricky tweeting to his manager to set up the fight.
If Held is not ready to go in the next four to five months, should Patricky jumped ahead of someone like Awad? This may be something that Coker or Rich Chou have to decide in the very near future.
