Bellator 139: Kongo vs. Volkov Pre-Fight Stats

Bellator will return Friday night as the promotion will be at the Kansas Star Arena in Mulvane, Kansas and the event will be headlined by a heavyweight bout as Cheick Kongo meets former Bellator champion Alexander Volkov.Bellator 139

The fight card will begin at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT with the online preliminary card and the four fight main card will start at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Spike TV.

Along with the heavyweight main event, the main card on Spike TV see a key lightweight bout in the co-main event as former title challenger David Rickels meets John Alessio.

Cheick Kongo (22-10-2) vs. Alexander Volkov (24-5)
Kongo will look to get back on track on Friday night after losing to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal at Bellator 134. He is 4-2 in Bellator and three of those wins have come by stoppage.

  • 4th most wins in Bellator heavyweight division history.
  • 16 of his 22 wins have come by knockout or submission.
  • Notable wins: Mirko Cro Cop, Pat Barry, Matt Mitrione, and Lavar Johnson.

Just like Kongo, Volkov will enter this fight following a defeat as he lost a split decision to Tony Johnson at Bellator 136 in April. Since losing the Bellator title to Vitaly Minakov, he is 5-1 and three of those wins have come by TKO/KO in the first round.

  • He is one of three fighters in Bellator history to win a fight with one second left in a round (Jason Fischer and Quinton Jackson).
  • Tied with Blagoi Ivanov for the 2nd most wins in Bellator heavyweight division history.

David Rickels (16-3) vs. John Alessio (35-17, 1NC)
Rickels is a former lightweight title challenger and he will be looking for his second straight win. This will be his fourth straight fight to take place at the Kansas Star Arena and he is 2-1 in his previous three fights.

  • Season Eight Lightweight Tournament winner.
  • His 22 second win at Bellator 63 against Jordan Smith is tied for the 5th fastest win in Bellator welterweight division history.
  • Tied with multiple fighters for the 3rd most wins in Bellator history.

Alessio snapped a four fight unbeaten streak at Bellator 119 last year when he defeated Eric Wisely by unanimous decision. It was his first victory since 2012 and his last stoppage victory came in 2011 against Shawn Fitzsimmons.

  • 3-3, 1NC since dropping down to lightweight in 2011.
  • 1-1 in Bellator and the defeat came against current champion Will Brooks.
  • 25 of his 35 wins have come by knockout or submission.

Pat Curran (20-7) vs. Emmanuel Sanchez (10-1)
Curran will be looking to snap a two fight losing streak when he faces Sanchez. He is coming off a split decision lost to Daniel Weichel at Bellator 133 and he is 1-3 in his last four fights.

  • Most cage time in Bellator history (3:34:39).
  • His victory against Daniel Straus at Bellator 112 is the latest stoppage in Bellator title fight history (5th, 4:46).
  • Tied for the most submissions in Bellator featherweight division history.

Sanchez took this fight on short notice when Goiti Yamauchi pulled out of the event due to an injury. He is currently on a six fight winning streak and the last two wins have come in Bellator.

  • 5 victories by submission.
  • Only career defeat came in 2013 against Lewis Gonzalez (unanimous decision).
  • Coming off a decision win against Alejandro Villalobos at Bellator 135.

Joe Schilling (2-4) vs. Hisaki Kato (4-1)
Schilling returned to the Bellator cage last year and scored a knockout victory against Melvin Manhoef. He is coming off a split decision defeat against Rafael Carvalho and he did his training camp for this fight at American Top Team.

  • Both of his MMA wins have come by stoppage.
  • Win over Manhoef was considered the knockout of the year in 2014.
  • 25-7 record in kickboxing.

Kato is making his Bellator debut and he enters this fight following a TKO defeat in March against Henrique Shigemoto. All of his victories have come by TKO and three of those wins have come in the first round.

  • All of his previous fights came in the Heat promotion.
  • Turned professional in 2013 and holds 2 wins in under 90 seconds.
  • Four of his five fights have ended in the first round.
