It’s been almost a year since Patricky “Pitbull” Freire last stepped into the Bellator cage.
While most would suspect some sort of injury layoff, Pitbull suggests that it simply due to the inability find a suitable opponent.
“Actually I’ve been waiting to get back into the cage since my last fight…I don’t know what happened, Bellator did not give me an offer before,” Pitbull told The MMA Report. “They came to me to fight Rickels in his home again and I didn’t think that fight made sense for me. I asked for several others and I’m here with this fight now.”
Most recently, Freire, along with his brother, current featherweight champion Patricio, has been in the news for engaging in a Twitter battle with current lightweight champion Will Brooks.
“Will Brooks, he was the one who started all this,” he said. “I don’t know what his problem is, he gets offended when someone challenges him. Lately that’s how you get fights. That’s how you get fans and people interested in your fights.”
In regards to his upcoming battle with Saad Awad, Freire sees his opponents strength as something that can be easily overcome.
“His hands…but mine are bit more powerful.”
However, having been inactive for 11 months and looking to get back on the winning track, Pitbull will take any path to victory.
“People tend to forget that I’m a black belt in BJJ and who knows maybe this time I’ll win by submission.”
