Chris Honeycutt: If you don’t stick to the game plan, then there is no plan at all

Bellator welterweight Chris Honeycutt suffered his first career defeat back in January against Paul Bradley at Bellator 148 and he will be returning to the Bellator cage in two weeks when he faces Matt Secor in the featured preliminary bout at Bellator 153.

Honeycutt (6-1, 1NC) was defeated at the 40-second mark of the opening round as Bradley won by knockout. During his appearance on yesterday’s edition of “The MMA Report Podcast” to discuss his upcoming fight against Secor, Honeycutt talked about his defeat against Bradley and explained how that lost is on his shoulders.

“I watched it several times, but only right after. I guess it really wasn’t beneficial, but I felt the need to torture myself,” Honeycutt said. “I did watch it over and over again scratching my head and why did I not stick to the game plan. When I fought him the first time, it was clearly going in my direction and that was the type of fight I needed to do again. I don’t know if it was the excitement of being the hometown or not, I can’t really pinpoint exactly. All I know it was a very good learning experience and maybe that was just the end of me being green.”

“I usually go in there and force my will onto people,” he continued. “Paul is a tough dude and it’s nothing something I should be doing in the first thirty seconds of the first round. That is something that I should be doing in the second or third round once I get the blood flowing and we are not at tip, top shape. We are starting to tire down and punches are not as heavy as they are in the first. Totally put that lost on my shoulders. My coaches had me perfectly prepared for the fight and if you don’t stick to the game plan, then there is no plan at all.”
