Russell Johnson explains why he decided to turn professional after 13 amateur fights

The professional debut of Russell Johnson will take place tomorrow night at the TTU Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion in Cookeville, Tennessee as he will meet Ed Massey at Valor Fights 34.

Johnson went 11-2 as an amateur and while that is a good amount of amateur fights to have people turning pro, that is not the reason he decided to turn pro now. Johnson explained on Tuesday’s edition of “The MMA Report Podcast” that he decided to turn pro now because no one would take a fight with him.

“When I was an ammy, no one would fight me,” Johnson stated on The MMA Report Podcast. “Like I told someone, god does not make men in a day and I guess god was not making men that day. So about six people turned back down on me so me and my coaches decided to go as there was nothing left at amateur. Shoot, just go pro.”
