Douglas Lima is now one of three men to win two Bellator tournaments as he defeated Ben Saunders by knockout in the second round to win the season eight welterweight tournament.
In the opening round, they would have a striking battle with each fighter landing kicks and punches. Saunders would land at the beginning of the round but Lima began to find his range and score with his kicks and right hand. He did open up a cut on the eye lid of Saunders before the first round came to a conclusion.
Between rounds, the cage side doctor looked at the cut over the eye of Saunders and decided to let the fight continue.
In what would be the final round, Lima would land a right hand that would drop Saunders and attempted to finish the fight with ground strikes. Saunders would be able to recover but his left eye was nearly closed shut. He would be able to get back to his feet but Lima would land a left kick that dropped Saunders and referee Jason Herzog came in to stop the fight.
Lima (25-5) joins Alexander Shlemenko and Pat Curran as the only fighters in Bellator history to win two tournaments in the organizations history. He will now wait to see what happens with current Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren and his contract.
