Bellator 101 Result: Will Brooks advances to lightweight tournament semifinal with decision victory over John Alessio

In the second lightweight tournament opening round bout, Will Brooks dominated John Alessio to advanced to the semifinals with a unanimous decision victory. Bellator 101 #3

The bout opened and Brooks lands several hard leg kicks, forcing Alessio to clinch. The fighters would separate and Brooks landed a hard head kick followed by a knee to the body.

Then out of nowhere to everyone’s surprise, Alessio took Brooks down. Scooting to the cage and making space, Brooks was able to get back to his feet. Brooks would land two takedowns in the round and survived a guillotine choke at the end of the round.

As the second round opened, Alessio had his takedown attempt stuffed and ended up on bottom after a scramble. The fighters would get stood up by the referee and Alessio charges, in his retreat Brooks trips. As Alessio again charges, Brooks takes him down and gets his back, working for an rear-naked choke as the round comes to a close.

The final round started with more of the same with Brooks getting the takedown early. In a scramble Brooks would take the back of Alessio once again. Alessio regains his feet and leans on Brooks against the cage. Brooks lands a solid knee sending Alessio down to the mat. The fight would remain on the ground for the remainder of the round and the judges scorecards would decide the winner.

All three judges scored the fight for Brooks (11-1) and he advances to the semifinals where he will meet Saad Awad in a rematch of their season eight lightweight tournament semifinal bout.
