The UFC Fight Night 33 fight card kicked off with the preliminary card as Takeya Mizugaki, Caio Magalhaes, Justin Scoggins, Krzysztof Jotko, and Alex Garcia walked away with victories.
Mizugaki defeated Nam Phan in the headliner of the preliminary card as he won by unanimous decision. He was able to use effective striking in the first two rounds to get the victory.
During the opening round, they opened by exchanging strikes and Mizugaki scored a takedown. Phan was able to get to his feet, but Mizugaki picked him apart on the feet.
As the second round opened, Mizugaki landed a flurry of punches and nearly finished the fight. Phan was able to survive and he began to land his combinations as the round came to an end. He would be able to carry over his success in the third round and landed a left hand that hurt Mizugaki.
Mizugaki would survive the significant strike and would make it to the final bell. All three judges would score the fight for Mizugaki (19-7-2) and he has now won four in a row.
Magalhaes wins close decision over Ring
Caio Magalhaes earned his second win in the UFC as he won a close unanimous decision over Ultimate Fighter alum Nick Ring.
During the opening moments of the fight, Ring accidentally poked Magalhaes in the eye and the bout was paused. Magalhaes would be able to continue and the fighters engaged in the clinch. While in the clinch, Ring landed several knees in the position and landed an elbow as they broke away. The fight would go to the ground before the end of the round and Magalhaes had a failed submission attempt.
Ring took the fight to the ground at the beginning of the second and Magalhaes went for a guillotine choke. The submission was unsuccessful and Ring went for a kimura submission. The attempt would be unsuccessful and he landed several short elbows. Magalhaes would end up reversing the position and had top position. He would land several strikes before the round would come to an end.
The final round opened with the fighters striking and Ring appeared to be slowing down. He attempted several takedowns in the final round, but he could not finish any of the takedown attempts and Magalhaes landed a majority of the strikes during the round.
Magalhaes (7-1) would win the fight on the scorecards as all three judges had it 29-28 for him. He has now won back to back fights in the UFC after dropping his debut
Scoggins stops Vaculik in the first round in UFC debut
In a bout of fighters making their official debut, Justin Scoggins of American Top Team defeated TUF: The Smashes alum Richie Vaculik by TKO in the first round.
After a brief feeling out process, Scoggins went for a takedown but he was unable to keep the fight on the ground. He would end up landing a right hook that dropped Vaculik and began to work his strikes on the ground. He would pass to the mount position and Vaculik gave up his back. Scoggins landed several punches and the referee came in to stop the fight.
Scoggins (8-0) has won his last five fights by TKO/KO and he now has five wins coming in the first round. During his post fight interview, he stated that he would like to be put on the UFC Fight Night 35 card in Atlanta.
Jotko wins UFC debut with decision over Santos
The first preliminary bout on Fox Sports 2 was a middleweight bout between two fighters making their UFC debut as Krzysztof Jotko defeated Bruno Santos by unanimous decision.
The fight opened with the fighters having an extended feeling out process and Santos landed the first significant strike with a body kick. They would end up clinching against the fence. Jotko would end up taking the fight to the ground but Santos was able to get back to his feet. The would continue to grapple against the fence before the referee separated them with 20 seconds left in the round.
They continued to clinch with each other in the second round and Santos attempted to get the fight to the ground. He would not be able to secure the takedown and Jotko was able to score a takedown. While on the ground, Jotko landed a significant punch and Santos went into survival mode. He would be able to survive and make it to the final round.
In the final round, Santos was able to get the fight to the ground and ending up getting on the back of Jotko. He was able to secure a rear-naked choke submission, but Jotko was able to escape and get in top position. He would land several big punches from top position before the final bell sounded.
All three judges scored the fight for Jotko (14-0) and his last three wins have come by decision. Overall, eight of his fourteen wins have come by decision.
Garcia makes short work of Wall with 1st round knockout
The only preliminary bout that was streamed online was a welterweight bout as Alex Garcia made his case for the knockout of the night bonus with a victory over Ben Wall at the 43 second mark of the opening round.
Wall attempted to get the fight to the ground in the opening moments, but Garcia was able to stop the attempt and keep the fight on the feet. Shortly after stopping the attempt, he landed a right hand that dropped Wall and the referee came in to stop the fight.
Garcia (11-1) has now won nine fights in the first round and four of those have come by knockout. This is the second fastest victory of his career and has three wins in under one minute.
