The first welterweight fight on the UFC on FX 5 fight card was a bout with Marcus LeVesseur fighting in his hometown against Carlo Prater.
LeVesseur opened with a left hand and Prater immediately went in for a takedown and the action went towards the cage.
LeVesseur had his back against the cage and Prater worked shoulder strikes and knees to LeVesseur.
LeVesseur was able to get off the fence and take the fight to the ground. After a lack of action on the ground, referee Josh Rosenthal had the fighters stand up. After trading strikes, the fighters would get into a grappling contest and Prater looked for a flying triangle. LeVesseur looked to slam his opponent, but Prater was able to lock in a guillotine choke.
LeVesseur was able to pop his head out of the submission attempt and the fighters continued to grapple against the cage. The fighters exchanged knees in the clinch along the cage, with neither fighter gaining an advantage and the round ended.
The second round opened as the first round ended with the fighters working the clinch and attempting to use their dirty boxing. LeVesseur was able to take the fight to the ground, but Prater was able to lock in a guillotine choke. LeVesseur worked around the submission attempt to get out of the dangerous position. Once he was able to get out of the submission hold, the action returned to the feet.
Once again, LeVesseur took the fight to the ground and Prater looked for a guillotine choke. Prater was unable to put LeVesseur in any serious trouble and the round ended.
The third round started just as the previous rounds went as the two fighters tried to gain an advantage in the clinch. LeVesseur started to let his hands go and threw two uppercuts that barely missed. Once again, the fighters would be in the clinch against the cage and the referee broke them apart for the lack of action.
The action would get back to the clinch position and LeVesseur would take the fight to the ground. Once again, Prater looked for a guillotine choke and LeVesseur was able to escape. The action would stay on the ground for the remaining part of the fight and the fight goes to the judges scorecards.
The judges were split on the decision and two of the three judges gave the fight to LeVesseur and this is his first UFC victory.
