One of the biggest fights in the UFC in 2014 is targeted to take place at UFC 177 on August 30th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has his rematch against Alexander Gustafsson.
The fight was reported by ESPN during the UFC 173 preliminary card and UFC President Dana White re-tweeted the story on Twitter.
Jones and Gustafsson had their first meeting at UFC 165 last year and they battled for five rounds. Jones would end up retaining the UFC light heavyweight title with a close decision victory and people began to talk about a rematch.
Since their first meeting, Gustafsson scored a stoppage victory against Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night 37 and Jones dominated Glover Teixiera at UFC 172 last month to retain his title. During one of the “UFC Embedded” episodes this week, the manager of Jones met with Lorenzo Fertitta and White to discuss a new contract for the long time UFC champion.
If this fight does take place in Las Vegas, this will be the first time since early 2011 that Jones will fight in Las Vegas. In his last fight in Las Vegas, he defeated Ryan Bader by stoppage and the victory secured him a title shot against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.
