WSOF 11 Recap: Justin Gaethje retains lightweight title with second round stoppage

World Series of Fighting 11 took place on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida and was headlined by Justin Gaethje retaining the lightweight title with a second round victory against Nick Newell. WSOF 11 Poster

Gaethje opened the fight by throwing leg kicks and the fighters exchanged in the pocket. Newell would end up looking for a takedown but Gaethje would stop the attempt.

The continued to exchange strikes and Newell landed several knees that got Gaethje backing up. Once again, Newell would look for a takedown but Gaethje would stop the attempt. Gaethje would land a combination that would take the fight to the mat and would open up a cut on the forehead of Newell. Gaethje would land several significant strikes on the ground and Newell looked for a leg lock.

Before the second round started, Newell looked tired and it showed during the round as there was not much behind his punches. Newell would attempt a takedown at the two minute mark of the round. The attempt would be unsuccessful and Gaethje would land several punches that dropped Newell. After he landed several punches on the mat, the referee came in to stop the fight.

Gaethje (12-0) now has ten career wins by TKO/KO and he is now 5-0 in the World Series of Fighting.

Fitch dominated Hallman for decision victory
The co-main event of the fight card was a middleweight bout as Jon Fitch used his ground game to win decision over Dennis Hallman.

In the opening minute of the fight, Fitch was able to get the fight to the ground and began to work his top game. Hallman would defend the strikes of Fitch and attempted to work his submissions. Fitch would defend the attempts and keep the fight on the ground for the remainder of the round.

Fitch would be able to get the fight right back to the mat at the beginning of the second round and Hallman struggled to keep Fitch off him as he continued to get punched on the ground. With 90 seconds left in the round, Hallman went for a leg lock but Fitch would defend the attempt and continue to control the fight in top position.

In the third round, Fitch would need 20 seconds to get the fight to the mat and landed several hammer fists. Hallman would be able to get Fitch into his guard and Fitch would continue to control the fight on the ground. Fitch would maintain the position until the final bell sounded and all three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Fitch.

Fitch (26-6-1, 1NC) has now won back to back fights in the World Series of Fighting and his next fight will likely be against welterweight champion Rousimar Palhares.

Bollinger wins third straight with first round submission
Cody Bollinger scored his third straight win as he submitted Pablo Alfonso in the first round of their catchweight bout.

The fighters opened with a fast pace and Bollinger would use his strikes to take the fight to the ground. Once on the ground, Alfonso worked on his submission game off his back and ended up going for a guillotine choke after a transition.

Bollinger would defend the submission and he would end up going for his own guillotine choke but Alfonso would be able to escape. Bollinger would continue to work his submission game as he got on the back of Alfonso and went for a rear-naked choke. After locking in the submission, Alfonso would tap out to the hold.

Bollinger (16-2, 1NC) has now won three in a row and two of those wins have come in the World Series of Fighting. Bollinger missed weight for this fight and he tweeted before the fight that he plans to move up to the 145 pound division.

Guillard wins WSOF debut with second round TKO
The opening bout of the main card was a catchweight bout as Melvin Guillard stopped Gesias “JZ” Cavalacante in the second round by TKO.

The fight opened with Guillard landing his punches and had Cavalcante on his heels. They would exchange strikes with Guillard landing the more significant strikes and the action would come to a halt when Cavalcante landed a illegal strike to the groin of Guillard. After taking less than one minute to recover, Guillard would be able to continue. After the restart, Guillard came out firing and Cavalcante looked to take the fight to the ground.

Guillard would stop the attempt and take the fight back to the center of the cage. They would strike for the remainder of the round and the fight moved into the second round. As the second round opened, Guillard was able to land a counter punch, which caused Cavalcante to back away. Cavalcante would end up taking the fight to the ground but Guillard was able to work back to his feet against the fence.

Cavalcante worked to attempt to get the fight back to the ground, but Guillard would defend the attempt and Cavalcante gave up on the attempt. The would move back to the center of the cage and Guillard landed multiple strikes and dropped Cavalcante. While Guillard was attempting to land strikes, Cavalcante would get back to his feet but Guillard continued to land his punches and the referee came in to stop the fight.

Guillard (32-13-2, 2NC) snaps a two fight winless streak and this is his first win since defeating Mac Danzig at UFC on FOX 8 last year. The victory will likely secure him a title shot in the World Series of Fighting lightweight division.
