UFC 174 headliner Ali Bagautinov tested positive for erythropoietin (EPO) during his drug test administered by the British Columbia Athletic Commission during UFC 174 and he has been suspended one year.
Bagautinov was defeated by flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson via unanimous decision and the defeat snapped an eleven fight winning streak. Following the news of the drug test, the UFC released a statement on Bagautinov.
“UFC 174 competitor Ali Bagautinov has been suspended by the British Columbia Athletic Commission for testing positive for erythropoietin (EPO),” the statement said. “He was also informed that his positive test violated the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and Promotional Agreement with Zuffa, LLC. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by our athletes. Bagautinov will serve a one-year suspension and must pass a drug test at the conclusion of his suspension before receiving clearance to compete in the UFC again.”
Bagautinov is now the second UFC fighter to test positive for erythropoietin (EPO) over the last month, with the other being Chael Sonnen. For Sonnen, it was his second failed drug test and he is expected to receive a suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission in two weeks.
