In what was called a “fun fight” by UFC President Dana White, Anderson Silva showed why he was a huge favorite over Stephan Bonnar and scored a first round TKO victory on Saturday night in Brazil.
Bonnar looked to get the fight to the ground in the early moments of the round, but he was unable to. With the action against the cage, Bonnar was able to mount much offense and backed away from Silva.
However, Silva just stayed next to the cage and keep his hands down. Bonnar attempted to throw strikes, but Silva just moved his head out of the way.
In the final minute of the 1st round, Anderson went on the attack and landed a knee to the body. The knee to the body essentially ended the fight as Anderson came in to land strikes on the ground before the referee came in to stop the fight.
Silva (21-4) now improves to 3-0 in the UFC light heavyweight division and is 16-0 overall in the organization. After the fight was over, Silva said this would be his last fight as a light heavyweight and that he is a middleweight fighter.
Big Nog returns in his return to the octagon
In the co-main event, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira made his return to the octagon after being away for 10 months because of a broken arm and defeated Dave Herman by an armbar submission in the second round. Prior to this fight, Herman said that jiu-jitsu did not work, which motivated Nogueira to use his jiu-jitsu to win the fight.
Prior to the finish of the fight, Nogueira (34-7-1, 1NC) went for an americana submission before the armbar and showed he is still one of the better heavyweights in the UFC. This is the 21st career submission victory for him and has now won two of his last three fights.
Glover Teixeira dominates Fabio Maldonado
Many people believe that Glover Teixeira has the potential to be a future UFC champion and he dominated Fabio Maldonado for two rounds to get a TKO victory at the end of the second round.
Teixeira (19-2) controlled the fight from the opening bell and Maldonado was unable to mount much offense. His only offense came at the end of the first round, when he landed a left hand that stunned Teixeira. After the second round, the cage side doctor came in to look at the cuts on Maldonado’s head and decided that the fighter could not continue.
