Jon Jones was stripped of the UFC light heavyweight title and suspended indefinitely on Tuesday following his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident on early Sunday in New Mexico.
UFC President Dana White announced the decision on Fox Sports 1 yesterday and joined SportsNation today on ESPN to discuss the decision to suspend and strip Jones of the UFC 205 pound title.
“Obviously he’s one of our biggest stars,” White stated on the ESPN show. “He was on his way to becoming one of the greatest ever, and he’s got some legal problems he’s got to deal with now. So we suspended him, stripped him of the title, and he’s got some work to do outside of the sport. Then we’ll decide when he comes back.”
Over the past couple of days, it has been pointed out the various Jones has faced outside of the cage. From his driving with a suspended license charge in 2011, being charged with DWI in 2012, and his most recent failed drug test prior to UFC 182 for cocaine. White admitted that the now former UFC champion has been given multiple chances and this is his last chance.
“A lot of people know, Jon’s had a lot of chances and this one was his last chance,” White said. “He’s got to handle his business outside of the Octagon and then we’ll see where he goes from there.”
