Freddy Assuncao recently became a free agent after being granted his release from his contract with the World Series of Fighting and he has returned to Titan FC.
Assuncao (8-1) had one previous fight in Titan FC in 2012 and is coming off a win against Brenson Hansen at World Series of Fighting 8 in January of last year. That fight was 15 months ago and he has not been back in the cage since that fight.
He wanted to gain some momentum from the victory over Hansen, but he was not offered any fights from the promotion. He admitted to The MMA Report that the last two years “sucked” due to lack of fights and a knee injury.
“It’s been pretty hard for the last two years because — before that, I had an ACL injury and I was out for a year,” Assuncao said. “I was fight was really fresh out of my ACL surgery. It was the first fight back and did not perform the way I wanted to. I was still pretty fresh out of my surgery. I fought in January of 2014 and thought that I was going to get some momentum last year. It turned out that I didn’t and did not have any fights for awhile. It sucked and I am ready to move on.”
Titan FC CEO Jeff Aronson confirmed to The MMA Report recently that Assuncao signed an exclusive multi-fight deal with the promotion and will likely make his Titan FC debut at a show in June. Many fighters come to Titan FC due to their contracts and while that was one reason Assuncao signed with the promotion, he also signed with them because they can keep him active.
“After talking to Jeff, it was a pretty easy decision to make as far as my deal with them,” Assuncao explained. “It’s very beneficial for me. Not only because if the UFC wants to sign me, I can go at any time. Also, they can keep me busy. I had a four fight deal with the WSOF last year and I asked to be released from their contract. They granted my release and even though I was coming off a win, they just did not keep me busy enough. Coming from the ACL injury, I needed to get some momentum going and they pretty much kept me from January to October on the shelf for no reason.”
“I would call every month and ask my former manager and nothing. I said ‘you know what, I do not need to work for a promotion that does not care about me.’ Titan was a no-brainer. I fought for Titan under a different ownership. Now that they have Jeff and those guys, it was definitely a no-brainer. My biggest concern was staying busy. I do this for a living. I could not making a living at WSOF — not fighting every three months like I wanted to.”
The Titan FC division currently features champion Kurt Holobaugh, Desmond Green, Andre Harrison, Cody Bollinger, and more. An opponent for Assuncao for the upcoming Titan FC 34 event has not been announced, he is ready to face whoever the promotion offers him.
“I will fight anyone and I have never been the fight to pick fights,” he said. “Especially because of my background. I come from a good name family. I have never really had any easy opponents. Even with the first fight of my career. I am use to that and I just want to fight. I just want to fight and it has been way too long. I feel great and I have no injuries. I am training well. I just want to fight, I do not care who it is.”
