One of the hottest topics on the regulatory side of mixed martial arts over the past couple of weeks has been the proposed changes to weigh-in procedures for mixed martial arts events. The California State Athletic Commission recently proposed some new changes and the Kansas Athletic Commission has altered their weigh-in procedures for Friday’s Bellator 150.
With all of the changes going on in terms of weigh-ins in mixed martial arts, what does weight management specialist Lou Giordano think about the changes?
“I think it’s about time,” Giordano said on the February 18 edition of The MMA Report Podcast. “It’s sad that more people had to die to wake people up that extreme weight cutting is not good. I think it’s sad that other so called experts in the industry have not been preaching for guys to walk around lighter and be healthier. I think it’s about time that they do it and I think it’s absolutely great that they are going to allow guys to weigh in earlier.”
“I think that should have been done from the start,” he continued. “There is no reason why you have to wait until 4 or 5 o’clock to weigh in. Why not weigh in early in the morning and you give those guys a lot more time to relax and rest up. Because a lot of torture goes into guys that wake up on weight. So let’s say you cut 20 pounds the week of weigh-ins. You wake up the day of weigh-ins on weight. You can not eat or drink anything for several hours just to make weight. If you allow guys to weigh-in in the morning, it will be a great thing. I think it’s great they are finally doing something about it.”
