Stephan Bonnar was essentially retired at this time last week and then he found out that the UFC wanted him to face Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 153 in Brazil.
Bonnar was a guest on last night’s edition of “UFC Tonight” on FUEL TV and admitted that he heard from reporters about the fight with Anderson before his manager called him.
He told the weekly UFC program that Karyn Bryant and Ariel Helwani contacted him about the fight with Anderson before his manager talked to him.
“I don’t know how they do it, but Ariel Helwani and Karyn Bryant have spies in the UFC office,” Bonnar said. “They asked me about it before I heard anything from my manager.”
He did admit that his manager contacted him about a fight with Glover Teixeira, but that was not a fight that he was interested in. Bonnar has maintained for the past couple of months that he wanted an opponent that was more popular than him and has more Twitter followers.
When his manager came back to him about a fight with Anderson, he said that he laughed and thought it was a good joke.
“I laughed,” he said. “I thought it was a good joke. I said, of course but like that would ever happen. Five days ago, I was retired and now I have the biggest fight I could ever dream of having.”
Bonnar is a huge underdog as the betting odds have him as a 14-1 underdog and he is loving the role of being this big of an underdog. “I’m loving it. I am like the greatest underdog in UFC main event history. I am fighting him in his back yard. I’ve got nothing to lose and no pressure on me. No one is giving me a chance and I love it.”
No one is expecting Bonnar to come close to having a chance in defeating Anderson Silva. If he can somehow pull off the upset, he immediately becomes a title contender in the UFC light heavyweight division.
