The UFC has been targeting to have Anthony Pettis take on Donald Cerrone in a lightweight title eliminator fight and the two former lightweight fighters will meet at UFC on FOX 6 on January 26th.
The fight was announced by the UFC on Tuesday night and is expected to be the co-main event on the fight card coming from the United Center in Chicago.
Pettis (15-2) is the last WEC lightweight champion and is currently on a two fight winning streak.
After his last win at UFC 144 against Joe Lauzon, he was scheduled to get a title shot. However, the UFC decided to give Frankie Edgar an immediate title shot instead of giving Pettis the title shot against Benson Henderson.
Cerrone (19-4, 1NC) is also on a two fight winning streak and is coming off a fight of the night and knockout of the night bonus victory over Melvin Guillard at UFC 150.
He has won eight of his last nine fights going back to the WEC and his last three losses have come against Henderson and the current number one contender in the UFC lightweight division Nate Diaz.
UFC on FOX 6 takes place on January 26th from the United Center in Chicago and will be headlined by Demetrious Johnson defending the UFC flyweight title for the first time against John Dodson.
