Eddie Mendez suffers injury, Cody Donovan steps in against Nick Penner at UFC on FX 6

A shoulder injury has forced Eddie Mendez to pull out of his UFC on FX 6 bout against Nick Penner and stepping up on short notice will be Cody Donovan.

UFC officials announced the changed on Wednesday and the fight will take place on the preliminary card.

Mendez revealed the injury on Twitter and stated the injury won’t allow him to complete on next week’s fight card.

“Sorry to announce that I have injured my shoulder and won’t be able to make my UFC Debut next week,” Mendez tweeted.

Donovan (7-2) will be making his UFC debut in this fight and is currently on a three fight winning streak. One of his wins during his recent winning streak came at Bellator 38, which was a decision victory over Brian Albin. During his career, he has six stoppage victories and two of his last three victories. Both of his career defeats are by knockout and both have come in the first round.

Penner (11-2) made his UFC debut earlier this year at UFC on FX 2 and was defeated by Anthony Perosh by TKO in the first round with one second left in the round. Prior to entering the UFC, he had won eight in a row and six of those wins were by stoppage.

UFC on FX 6 will air live in the United States next Friday night and will feature the lightweight and welterweight finals of TUF: The Smashes and will be headlined by George Sotiropoulos meeting Ross Pearson in a five round lightweight bout.
