John Morgan of MMAJunkie.com initially reported the story and the UFC has released a statement over the situation.

“The Ultimate Fighting Championship has fined middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva $50,000 for refusing to take part in a planned pre-UFC 162 media event,” the statement said.

The UFC middleweight champion was scheduled to talk to several media outlets today in Los Angeles but decided he would not participate in the media event and flew home to Brazil.

Silva (33-4) will be defending his UFC middleweight title in the main event of UFC 162 on July 6th from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas when he is challenged by Chris Weidman.

This is not the first time that the UFC has had a fighter not show up to a media event. In 2011, Nick Diaz missed a series of media stops for a scheduled fight against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137. Ultimately, UFC President Dana White pulled Diaz from the title fight and he ended up facing BJ Penn on the card.

As of right now, Silva or his management team has released a statement on why the UFC champion decided to not attend the media event and return home to Brazil.
