Roland Delorme fought in his hometown of Winnipeg on Saturday night at UFC 161 and defeated Edwin Figueroa by unanimous decision.
As the action started, Delorme came straight forward and ended up taking the fight to the ground. He began to work for his submissions as he transitioned to the back of Figueroa.
After not being able to get a submission in that position, he went for a triangle choke from his back but Figueroa was able to escape.
With Delorme being unable to get a submission, Figueroa began to land strikes from top position. Delorme would grab one of the legs of Figueroa and looked for an ankle lock. As he had the submission, he passed to top position on the ground and once again began to look for submissions.
Delorme passed to get the back of Figueroa and began to look for a rear-naked choke. As he was looking for the submission, he locked in a body triangle and had one of the arms of Figueroa locked in the body triangle. Figueroa was able to get out of the position with ten seconds left in the round and the fight headed to the second round.
Delorme opened the second round by going for a takedown and he would eventually get the fight to the ground. Once on the ground, he had the back of Figueroa and passed to top position. While on his back, Figueroa went for a triangle choke and then attacked the arm of Delorme. He was unable to get the submission and Delorme continued to work his ground game from top position.
Figueroa was able to flip the position and landed several short elbows from top position. Delorme appeared to be wearing down as Figueroa worked his strikes from the ground. Delorme was able to flip the position and get the back of Figueroa in the final 30 seconds of the round. He was unable to lock in a submission before the bell sounded and the fight moved to the final round.
As the final round opened, the fighters began to brawl and Delorme took the fight to the ground. Figueroa went for a heel hook submission but the submission was not successful. Once again, Delorme got the back of his opponent and locked in the body triangle. Figueroa worked his way back to his feet but Delorme still had ahold of him.
Delorme would get the fight to the ground and pass to different positions including side control. He looked for various submissions in different positions but Figueroa would be able to defend the attempts. In the final 30 seconds of the fight, Figueroa had top position on the ground and landed several strikes. Delorme was able to weather the storm and make it to the final bell.
All three judges scored the fight 29-28 for Delorme (9-1, 1NC) and he has won three of his four fights in the UFC. This is the second straight lost for Figueroa (9-3) and he is now 2-3 in the UFC.
