Chael Sonnen snapped a two fight losing streak on Saturday night in the main event of UFC Fight Night 26 as he defeated Mauricio “Shogun” Rua by guillotine choke submission in the first round.
Sonnen didn’t waste anytime in the fight as he immediately took the fight to the ground and had Shogun on his back. He began to work his top game but Shogun was able to get off his back and took Sonnen to the mat.
They would wrestle on the mat with Sonnen eventually taking control. As Shogun was attempting to get back to his feet, Sonnen decided to go for a guillotine choke and once he locked the submission in, Shogun tapped out.
Sonnen (28-13-1) now has five career wins by submission and this is his first win as a light heavyweight since 2005. In his post fight interview, he called out Wanderlei Silva and would like that matchup to take place at the end of the year pay-per-view. Rua (21-8) has now lost back to back fights in the UFC and is overall UFC record is 5-6.
