In the only heavyweight bout on the UFC 165 main card, Brendan Schaub won his second straight fight as he defeated Matt Mitrione by d’arce choke submission in the first round.
The bout opened with Schaub exchanging strikes with Mitrione and opened up a cut near the left eye of Mitrione earlier in the bout. After a wild exchange of punches, Schaub took the fight to the ground and immediately went for the d’arce choke submission.
Mitrione attempted to get out of the hold but Schaub had it locked in tight and Mitrione ended up not tapping out and the referee had to come in to stop the fight when he was no longer responding.
Schaub (10-3) has won back to back fights and this is his first career submission win.
