UFC on FOX 9 Preliminary Card Results

The UFC on FOX 9 card kicked off with the prelims and Ryan LaFlare remained undefeated as he defeated Court McGee by unanimous decision in the headliner of this portion of the fight card.UFC on FOX 9 small

LaFlare was able to get the fight to the ground early in the fight and ended up getting the back of McGee. He would not be able to lock in a submission and McGee got back to his feet. They would have a striking bout for the rest of the round.

During the second round, LaFlare would score two takedowns and appeared to be up two rounds heading into the final round. McGee’s best round would come in the last round as he was able to secure multiple takedowns and LaFlare seemed to be slowing down.

All three judges would agree as they all had the fight 29-28 for LaFlare (10-0) and he is now 3-0 in the UFC. The defeat for McGee (16-4) snaps a two fight losing streak and it’s his first defeat as a UFC welterweight.

Barboza weathers early storm to win decision against Castillo
Danny Castillo nearly finished Edson Barboza in the first round, but Barboza was able to survive and win the fight by majority decision.

Castillo nearly finished the fight in the first round as he dropped Barboza and went for a rear-naked choke submission. After being unable to get the submission, Castillo landed multiple punches on the ground. Barboza would be able to survive the flurry of punches and make it out of the round.

Barboza would take over the fight in the final two rounds as he was able to land his leg kicks and keep the fight on the feet. Castillo appeared to be gassed out as the fight moved into the third round and struggled to mount much offense in the final two rounds.

The fight would go to the scorecards and Barboza (13-1) won by majority decision. Only one of the judges had the fight as a draw, which was a surprise with most people.

Green improves to 3-0 in UFC with decision over Healy
Bobby Green stepped into the UFC cage for the second time in 38 days and defeated Pat Healy by unanimous decision.

Green was able to get the fight to the ground early, but Healy was able to get back to his feet. They would strike for a majority of the round, with Green looking relaxed. As the round was coming to an end, Healy was able to get the fight to the ground and ended up getting the back of Green. He would not be able to get a finish for the round came to an end.

Healy became the aggressor in the second round as he continued to come forward throughout the round. After exchanging strikes in the round, Green secured a takedown in the final 15 seconds of the round.

The fight moved into the third round and Healy was able to get the fight to the ground and get the back of Green. Green would reverse the position and got back to his feet. Green would score another takedown before the round came to an end and the scorecards would decide the winner.

All three judges had the fight for Green (22-5) and he has now won seven in a row.

Former Bellator champ Makovsky defeats Jorgensen in UFC debut
Former Bellator bantamweight champion Zach Makovsky made his UFC debut at UFC on FOX 9 and defeated Scott Jorgesen by unanimous decision.

As the fight opened, Makovsky failed to get the fight to the ground, but landed a left hand that hurt Jorgensen. After the strike, Jorgensen was able to close the distance and went for a front choke against the cage. Makovsky would defend the attempt and landed a significant left hand. The round would come to an end with the fighters grappling on the ground.

Jorgensen’s best round came in the second as Makovsky appeared to be slowing down and Jorgensen was the aggressor. Jorgensen was able to get the fight to the ground and was unable to secure a submission attempt.

As the third round opened, Makovsky slammed Jorgensen to the mat. Jorgensen would reverse the position. However, Makovsky would get back into top position and eventually got the back of Jorgensen. He would be unable to get a submission locked in but his strikes opened up a cut near the right eye of Jorgensen.

The fight would go to the judges and all three had the fight 30-27 for Makovsky (17-4). He has won three in a row since his exit in Bellator and all of those wins have come at flyweight. Jorgensen (14-8) has dropped back to back fights and four of his last five.

Stout uses striking to score unanimous decision over McKenzie
UFC veteran Sam Stout won his ninth fight in the organization as he defeated Ultimate Fighter alum Cody McKenzie by unanimous decision.

McKenzie was able to keep off to a good start in the fight and began to look for a submission. However, Stout would get back to his feet and begin to score with effective striking. He landed a body kick that appeared to hurt McKenzie. He would drop McKenzie later in the round and the fight moved into the second.

Stout continued to land his strikes in the second and third rounds, as McKenzie was unable to secure a takedown. The only time that McKenzie threatened Stout in the final ten minutes came in the final 30 seconds of the fight. The fight went to the ground and McKenzie looked for a leg lock. Stout would be able to escape and the final bell sounded.

All three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Stout (20-9-1) and he has won two of his last three fights. McKenzie (14-4) has dropped two of his last three fights and this was his return bout to the lightweight division.

Trujillo wins rematch against Bowling by TKO in 2nd round
The rematch between Abel Trujillo and Roger Bowling took place on Saturday and Trujillo won by TKO in the second round.

The fight opened with Trujillo securing a takedown and Bowling got back to his feet and went for a standing guillotine choke. He would take the choke to the ground and Trujillo escaped. They began to exchange strikes, which included Trujillo landing several knees to the body. Trujillo would score another takedown and Bowling got back to his feet before the round came to an end.

The fight would come to an end in the second round as Trujillo scored a takedown and landed several vicious strikes on the ground. As Bowling was working back to his feet, Trujillo landed several punches and referee John McCarthy came in to stop the fight.

Trujillo (11-5, 1NC) is now 2-1, 1NC in his four fight UFC career and both of those wins have come by TKO. Bowling (11-5, 1NC) is now winless in his last four fights and could be released from the UFC following this defeat.

Ozkilic wins UFC debut by split decision
The opening bout of the UFC on FOX 9 preliminary card was a flyweight bout as Alptekin Ozkilic defeated Darren Uyenoyama by split decision.

Uyenoyama went for multiple single leg takedowns throughout the fight and Ozkilic was about to contain a majority of the attempts. During the opening round, a majority of the fight would be on the ground with both fighters securing a takedown.

In the second round, Uyenoyama was able to land a single takedown but Ozkilic was able to get into side control. The fight would get back to the feet and Uyenoyama pulled guard to get the fight back to the ground. Ozkiic went into his guard and landed several strikes and the round would end on the feet with Uyenoyama landing leg kicks.

Uyenoyama opened the final round by continuing to land leg kicks and Ozkilic got the fight to the ground. The fight went back to the feet and Uyenoyama threw a spinning back kick that did not land. Ozkilic was able to secure another takedown and the fight would end on the feet.

The judges would be split on the scorecards as the scores were 30-27, 28-29, and 29-28 for Ozkilic (9-1). He has won four in a row and Uyenoyama (8-5) has dropped back to back fights after starting his UFC career with back to back wins.
